The Value of a Mini-Vacation

Several of my friends have second homes a few a hours away that they retreat to on summer weekends. They love that lifestyle and it works for their families. As for me, I can't even imagine having the energy to pack up and travel three or four hours for two days away. What I do love is going to our local pond which has a small beach complete with lifeguards. It is this beautiful oasis in the heart of a city. It is so peaceful and beautiful there and it is only 5 minutes away! The family and I will often spend an hour or two there after my husband is done with work. We can swim and the boys play in the sand and it just washes the stress of everyday life away.

A mini-vacation can be a wonderful thing. Where are the hidden retreats near where you live where you can just get away from it all for a little while? A vacation doesn't need to be long or far away to be refreshing.

Patrice, My new mini retreat is camping.  We can be at a lake 45 minutes from our home in the trailer for one night and it seems like a world away.  There is something very restorative about being near water.  Thanks for this post!

We live downtown, on the main street – six lanes of traffic constantly streaming by us.  But one block down the street is a river/bike-way that connects the two main lakes in the city.  Every morning I walk to the river path, and follow it to one of the city's most beautiful parks, complete with lagoon, which then reaches the larger lake.  I pray my rosary as I enjoy the beautiful river, trees, blooms and waterfowl.  When I reach the lake I walk out on the breakwater that juts out to protect boats coming in.  As the waves either gently lap up or crash on the rocks I pretend I'm in New England, or California, or Jamaica.  My walk winds back through the park, along the side of the lagoon where I enjoy the lovely homes that border it.  By the time I return home this place of unsuspected beauty entwined with my prayer has rejuvenated me and I'm ready to face downtown living for another day.
