The Ark of the New Covenant: Eucharistic Renewal is Seeded in Canada!

QUEBEC,QC,CA — Yesterday, at the opening of the 49th International Eucharistic Congress (IEC), Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Archbishop of Quebec and Primate of Canada, and Papal Legate Cardinal Jozef Tomko, welcomed what may become an enduring symbol of the IEC for decades to come: The Ark of the New Covenant. The Ark is an all-Canadian innovation and a testament to the reverence this city, the first site of Catholicism in North America (outside of Mexico), still has for the Eucharist and the Gospel.

A year after the announcement that Quebec would host the Congress, the youth of the archdiocese were convened and asked for their input, “One young man stood up and suggested a symbol, like the World Youth Day Cross,” Sister Doris Lamontagne, Assistant Secretary General of the 49th IEC, explained in an interview with CatholicExchange.com. A group of young people and religious, commissioned by Cardinal Ouellet, presented the Ark the next year.

Quebec artist Alain Rioux to evoke the memories of the Ark’s of scripture: Noah’s Ark and the Ark of the Covenant carried by the Israelites. Both symbols point to the ultimate scriptural Ark: the Blessed Virgin Mary. “It is Mary who led us into faith by bearing the True Presence of Christ who is the New Covenant,” according to Sister Marie-Pierre Delorme, S.S.M.N., a theologian who worked closely with the pilgrims caring for the Ark. The top of the Ark was designed so that it could hold either a monstrance or the Bible. A full description of the symbolism of the Ark is available here.

The Pilgrimage

In May 2005, the Ark began its journey to Quebec with a Blessing by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome. With the support of the Knights of Columbus and parishes throughout Canada, it visited every diocese in every province of Canada and the Northwest Territories. “It was the way that the youth called the rest of Canada to come to the Eucharistic Congress,” explained Sister Lamontagne.

On a snowy Easter Sunday in March of this year, the Ark began its final 64 day walking pilgrimage as it traveled from Midland, Ontario to Quebec. “The 1000 kilometer journey is significant,” 28 year old, Jerry Grzadka, Pilgrimage Coordinator and one of the portaguers told CE, “because it back tracks the journey taken by the Canadian Martyrs who left Quebec to carry the Eucharist to the rest of Canada.”

Each day the portaguers pushed the Ark atop a two wheeled cart they called ‘The Ark Mobile’ which was actually the converted wheelbase of a World War II Army stretcher. “There’s a lot of coordination that goes on,” Jerry advised. “You can’t just go out into the street and start pushing an Ark. We had to get permits from Provincial and Metropolitan authorities along the way. Because we walked everywhere with a police escort, many people thought the Ark was very valuable.”

“Just as the Isrealites carried the Ark of the Covenant through the desert,” remembered Sr. Delorme. “We carried the New Ark through a spiritual desert. The secular world, especially French Speaking Canada, is in the desert thirsting for the spiritual, but it has forgotten its spiritual roots.” As she walked through rural Quebec awakening to its spring planting season, she was impacted by the connection between the farmers and the portaguers. “The framers had their farm truck, and we had our Ark Mobile. They were turning over the dirt to plant seeds for their crops, and we were turning over hearts and planting the seed of faith.”

The pilgrims were diverse individuals who felt called to join; they came from no single organization. Ranging in age from 18 to 62, they included grandfathers, students and mothers. There were 5 permanent members and others who would join as they could. Their stories are shared on this video blog.

A Tool for Catechesis

Each night the Ark and pilgrims stopped at parishes along the way where parishioners had planned liturgies. The Ark became a tool whereby the faithful learned about the IEC and its threefold mission aligned with that of the Congress: Catechesis, Liturgy and Commitment. “The first thing we saw was that people came out of curiosity to see the Ark. That extended to curiosity about the Congress,” remembered Sr. Delorme.

The faithful were invited to insert small pieces of paper containing their personal prayer intentions and commitments to the Blessed Sacrament into the hold of the Ark. This devotion was so popular that the contents were emptied five times. The papers are now kept at the foot of an altar in Quebec.

Conversion

“The ark did not come alone,” reminded Sr. Delorme, “It came with people. The story of their conversions will be a lasting impression of the Pilgrimage. These pilgrims have been changed.”

“People were always lined up to greet us as we reached the Churches,” Jerry told CE. “Each night we stayed in their different houses and talked with them. By the next morning, we were very close.”

Jerry recalled one lasting impression that occurred on that first day in the snow. The route called for them to push the Ark up a two-mile hill on a road covered with snow. As they struggled up the hill, slipping and sliding, they passed a young man working at the front of his house. “He just started asking us why we were doing this crazy thing,” Jerry said. “We told him about the Ark, the pilgrimage and the Congress. As we continued the struggle, he started helping us. It took us two hours to get up that hill.”

“As we worked together, we asked him his name. It was Simon,” Jerry recalled in amazement. “We told him that he was just like Simon of Cyrene from scripture.” They told the young man the story of the Cyrenian from the synoptic Gospels whom the soldiers pressed into service to carry the cross for Jesus on the way to His crucifixion. The young man had never heard the story, but none doubted the special grace of the moment they were sharing. “He ended up spending two days with us,” Jerry concluded.

The Ark’s Next Destination

On Sunday, Jerry and artist Alain Rioux were among those who presented the Ark to open the 49th IEC. The Ark will remain in an adoration chapel at the site of the Congress in Quebec City for the duration of the IEC, but its next destination is uncertain.

Jerry admits, “It has taken on a life of its own. It is in demand from many dioceses throughout Canada and the U.S. Officially, request has been made to the Pontifical Committee [for the International Eucharistic Congresses] to make it a permanent part of future congresses.”IEC logo

“There is some talk that it will go to the World Youth Day,” said Sr. Delorme. “It could just end up staying in Quebec. Whatever becomes of the Ark I hope (and am sure) great meaning will be given to it.”

For her part, Assistant Secretary General, Sr. Lamontagne laughed when asked by CE about the Ark’s next destination. “The future at the Ark? This is the secret of the Lord.”

Irrespective of its future, it is certain its message and the witness of those who accompanied it will endure in the hearts of those, like Simon of Midland, who were graced by an encounter with the Ark. Unquestionably, hundreds have been brought beyond the Ark as symbol to the Real Presence of Christ it so often enthroned: The Eucharist.

Great article, but there is a mistake at the beginning. St. Augustine Florida is actually an older site with regard to it’s Catholic Roots. Look it up on Wikipedia. So after Mexico, the US holds the claim to the next oldest location for Catholic Heritage. Just to clear the record. Not to take away from the great work of the New Ark in Quebec. That stands on it’s own as a beautiful witness and work of the Faith, regardless of the date at which the Catholic Faith was brought to Quebec.

Catholic Legate, Canada uses a defacto-defacto interpretation of magisterial texts: who gave them permission? No magisterial document recommends this analysis

John Pacecho, Art Sippo and Peter Vere are saying every one defacto needs to enter the Church for salvation but some defacto do not have to. Hence the baptism of desire is an exception. This is irrational and contrary to the Principle of Non Contradiction.
Here is the ‘dogma’ mentioned in the Letter of the Holy Office. Catholic Legate has the choice of using a defacto-defacto interpretation or a defacto-dejure analysis. They choose the defacto-defacto (explicit-explicit) version instead of the rational explicit-implicit interpretation.

    LETTER OF THE HOLY OFFICE
‘… none of those existing outside the Catholic Church… can have a share in life eternal… unless before death they are joined with Her… No one… can be saved, unless he (Defacto) remain within the bosom and the unity of the Catholic Church.” (Pope Eugene IV, the Bull Cantate Domino, 1441.)

(Defacto) ‘… when a person is involved in invincible ignorance God accepts also an implicit desire…’ – Letter of the Holy Office 1949 (Emphasis added).
POPE PIUS IX (Allocution December 9th, 1854)
Pope Pius IX was saying: (Defacto):’We must hold as of the faith, that out of the Apostolic Roman Church there is no salvation; that she is the only ark of safety, and whosoever is not in her perishes in the deluge…’ and (Defacto): ‘we must also, on the other hand, recognize with certainty that those who are invincible in ignorance of the true religion are not guilty for this in the eyes of the Lord…’
The Catholic Legate website says defacto, explicitly every one needs to be a formal member of the Catholic Church for salvation and defacto, explicitly some non Catholics on earth do not have to be a member and these cases are known to us.They are known to us so they contradict the dogma outside the church no salvation. This is irrational. This is the interpretation of Fr.Hans Kung .

The Catholic Legate uses a defacto-defacto analysis of the Letter of the Holy Office 1949.If one uses the irrational defacto-defacto analysis of the above magisterial texts instead of the traditional dejure-defacto interpretation it would mean the popes contradicted themselves and that Vatican Council II contradicted a defined dogma. It would be a criticism of the infallibility of the popes ex cathedra. It would also be contrary to the Principle of Non Contradiction. It is also heresy to claim that there are defacto exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.
With the defacto-dejure analysis we see that the Magisterial texts affirms the traditonal interpretation of the Church Fathers, the saints, the popes and Councils, including Vatican Council II. This was the traditional interpretation of Fr. Leonard Feeney of Boston.
QUANTO CONFICIAMUR(Defacto) 8. ‘… no one can be saved outside the Catholic Church – Quanto Conficamur, Pope Pius IX 1863
(Defacto) 7. ‘… those who are struggling with invincible ignorance about our most holy religion. Sincerely observing the natural law and its precepts inscribed by God on all hearts and ready to obey God, they live honest lives and are able to attain eternal life by the efficacious virtue of divine light and grace. Because God knows, searches and clearly understands the minds, hearts, thoughts, and nature of all, his supreme kindness and clemency do not permit anyone at all who is not guilty of deliberate sin to suffer eternal punishments…-Quanto Conficamur
    There is a choice always:
VATICAN COUNCIL II(Defacto) ‘The Church…is necessary for salvation… faith and baptism…for through baptism as through a door men enter the Church.’-Lumen Gentium 14, Vatican Council II.(Dejure or Defacto) ‘…those who have not yet received the Gospel are related in various ways to the people of God…’ (Lumen Gentium 16)John Pachecho, Art Sippo and Peter Vere contradict each other on the website. They are obviously sincere and are trying to be faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church not realizing that there was a flaw which originated with the Archbishop of Boston Richard Cushing.
Explicitly known baptism of desire is the Richard Cushing Error. He assumed that those saved with the baptism of desire or in invincible ignorance are defacto known to us.
The cardinals who issued the Letter of the Holy Office 1949 could have also been influenced by the Archbishop of Boston stating only those who know would be condemned implying that we know cases of persons saved with the baptism of desire.
Critics of the Letter of the Holy Office point out that this document  was not signed by the Secretary of the Congregation and not published in the Acta Apostolica Sedis. Fr.Karl Rahner was quick to include it in the Denzinger Enchridion. There were also anomalies in the excommunication for disobedience, and not heresy, of Fr.Leonard Feeney.
George Brenner writes (Feb.12, 2012 )Hindsight can be 20/20. I would have liked Father Feeney to go to Rome but history does show that Father Feeney was reinstated without recanting one word of his positions on No Salvation Outside the Catholic Church. So, Father was “back in the Church” by professing the very doctrine which many said had “put out!” Father cited the following has his refusal to go to Rome:
****Father Feeney answered with 1917 canon law:
#1715 – requires a formal statement of charges against a defendant.
    #1723 – states that a non-canonical summons is void.
    #1959 – forbids penalties without a trial.
#1842/1843 – require the defendant be informed both of the charges against him and the nature of the proceedings…
and further went on to say:
Because the first interest of the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is the preservation of the Faith, we have been reluctant to make any formal representations to the Holy See concerning any secondary matters relating to our activities. Your Excellency is well aware that the first obligation of every Catholic is to defend with his lifeblood every doctrine of his Holy Faith. In doing this, he has the assurance both of his own salvation, and even if persecuted by fellow Catholics, of his ultimate vindication by the Church. The lives of the saints amply demonstrate this. Many of the saints were vilified, interdicted, excommunicated, and even martyred by those of their own Faith. We refer specifically to Saints Athanasius, Ignatius of Constantinople, Alphonsus Ligouri, John the Baptist de la Salle, Thomas of Hereford, Thomas a’Becket, Joan of Arc, John Fisher and Thomas More. http://theblackcordelias.wordpress.com/2008/08/20/no-salvation-outside-the-catholic-church/The Archbishop of Boston never responded to these questions and neither did he lift the excommunication after the Letter of the Holy Office was issued. He gave all of us Catholics a new doctrine with a defacto-defacto interpretation of standard magisterial texts.- Lionel Andrades
