The Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple: A Moment of Faith and Dedication

The Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple, celebrated on February 2nd, marks the moment when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem, following Jewish law. According to the custom, a firstborn son was to be dedicated to God, and a purification offering was to be made by the mother.

In the temple, they encountered Simeon, a righteous man to whom God had promised he would see the Messiah before his death. Upon seeing Jesus, Simeon recognized Him as the Savior and proclaimed the famous Canticle of Simeon: “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace… for my eyes have seen your salvation” (Luke 2:29-30). The prophetess Anna also rejoiced, speaking about Jesus to all who awaited the redemption of Israel.

This event highlights the obedience of Mary and Joseph to God’s law, the fulfillment of God’s promises, and the recognition of Christ as the Light of the world. It reminds us of the importance of presenting ourselves and all that we have to God.

Practical Lessons:

  1. Dedicate Your Work and Family to God: Just as Mary and Joseph presented Jesus to the Lord, we should consciously dedicate our daily work, relationships, and decisions to God. Begin the day with a simple prayer of offering: “Lord, may all I do today be for Your glory.”
  2. Recognize Christ in Everyday Moments: Simeon and Anna saw Jesus and immediately recognized Him as the Savior. In our daily lives, we can seek Christ in small ways—through an act of kindness, in prayer, or by noticing His presence in others.
  3. Be Patient in Waiting for God’s Promises: Simeon and Anna waited years to see the Messiah, trusting in God’s timing. If you are waiting for an answered prayer or a new opportunity, trust that God’s plan is unfolding, even if it is not yet clear.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, as Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the temple, help us to present our own lives before You with trust and obedience. Grant us patience as we wait for Your will to unfold. Open our eyes to recognize Christ in our daily lives, and may we offer all we do for Your glory. Amen.

    Didn't the Presentation used to be the Purification of Mary which takes place for a Hebrew woman 40 days after the birth of a male child? and yes, he is offered to God and then redeemed by the offering of the doves, or something bigger for richer people. The purification is 60 days after a female child and I don't know if she would be offered and redeemed. The circumcision is altogether different and Mary probably would not have been allowed out into society under Jewish law at 8 days. Can you clarify these 2 different occasions in Jesus' life?I think you are right in saying that Mary submitted to the law as Jesus did showing us that obedience is very important.

    Dear Mary Ann: I think I can answer your questions to some extent.  You're right: Mary would not have been "allowed out" after only 8 days; check out the story of John the Baptist's circumcision: it would seem that the (rabbi–there's a specific name for those who do this, I think, but I can't remember at the moment) came to Zechariah's house.  ???

    Also, you're right in that female offspring were not "offered and redeemed".  The Law was primarily addressed to males (Eve was "tricked", but Adam made a conscious choice in the Garden), and primarily concerned them.

    And, finally, I agree with you that both Jesus and Mary (and Joseph,too) submitted to the Law.  They were all "good Jews", and St. Paul makes a point of Jesus being born "under the Law".

    The Presentation of Jesus in the temple is not the Presentation of Mary (feast: Nov 21). It’s formerly known or also known as the Purification of Mary, and in the east is called “The Encounter.”

    Dear Lord, Jesus.  I cannot thank You enough for the gifts that You share with me to help others on this earth in their needs and requirements.  You share with me Your love, peace, mercy, compassion, kindness, patience and respect every single day.  These gifts do “live” in my mind and heart and because of Your love, they fall forward to others in many, wonderful ways.  Thank you, Dear God, for these gifts.  I definitely do LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS YOU LOVE ME.  I do want continuous Grace to forever fulfill Your words, Dear Lord.  AMEN  XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO

    The Lord even submitted himself to genital mutilation, because that was what their parents thought was best for him and they were obeying the law. Fortunately, many Catholics, other Christians and even some Jews and Muslims nowadays have come to realize that both male and female mutilation is wrong. I´m so glad my boy is intact, and
    I´m sorry I couldn´t convince my brother and his former wife to refrain to do it to my nephew who is also my godson. Fortunately, fewer and fewer boys are now being circumcised in Mexico, my country, and in other countries as well, but female circumcision is sadly still very prevalent in Africa.
