Pandering to Pelosi

The incipient speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, is showing what I consider extreme arrogance, even for a pro-abortion figure in public life who claims to be a faithful Catholic. Her handlers are making it abundantly clear that anything goes in their effort to showcase Pelosi and her life story, including the use of a Catholic Mass to cement her public image as a Catholic mother and grandmother.

That, my friend, is a disgrace that I cannot ignore.

As a practicing Catholic mother and grandmother, I am highly offended that this woman would use the influence of her new office to flaunt her Catholic label while advocating the brutal murder of preborn children without apology. This "mother and grandmother" from California's 8th Congressional district in San Francisco has been one of the most outspoken advocates for unrestricted abortion in Congress.

Perhaps the only thing more egregious than her support for aborting preborn children is her inability to comprehend the sacrilegious nature of her intended use of the Mass scheduled for January 3 at Trinity University, a Catholic institution in Washington, D.C. To prevent such a scandal from occurring we have respectfully asked Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C. to intervene and cancel any festivities at the Catholic college, particularly any attempt to honor Pelosi during Mass.

The reasons for this request are best characterized by quoting Archbishop Wuerl's recent commentary, "The Human Quest for God." He faithfully wrote, "a reflection on the moral order in the universe can lead us to a natural knowledge of God. We are aware that our actions should be just, truthful and temperate."

The act of abortion is a grave injustice perpetrated against an innocent human being created by God in His own image. Those who advocate this act are deceiving mothers by suggesting to them that their children are nothing more than disposable problems and instilling in these mothers the idea that "freedom of choice" empowers them to make a decision that results in the death of their child. There is nothing temperate about the act of abortion. In fact, aborting a child falls into the category of one of the most intemperate acts currently engrained in the culture.

A thinking person with any sort of moral sensibilities would conclude that the bald-faced contradiction between advocating for abortion and heralding one's attendance at a Catholic Mass is simply outrageous and should not be permitted. While it is usually the case that we should not prevent another person from attending Mass, which is a source of grace and blessing, this is no ordinary grandmother attempting to reconcile her abortion advocacy with her God; this is the soon-to-be speaker of the House making a public spectacle of the Mass for political purposes as she attempts to improve her public image.

At what cost does a prelate of the Catholic Church permit such an atrocity?

Archbishop Wuerl wrote in the same column that we "hear in the voice of our conscience," which is a "manifestation of the presence of God," the insistent call to goodness. "Conscience is described as the still, quiet voice of God within each of us," he said. It seems to me that the archbishop would be doing Congresswoman Pelosi a tremendous favor if he were to quietly but firmly inform her that her staff's public and repeated focus on the Mass as part of her "agenda" is an insult to her faith because she has not listened to the voice of God, but rather has succumbed to the voices of the culture of death. Otherwise, she would not champion abortion on demand as a "right" in America, nor would she be continually casting her votes against even the slightest pro-life legislation.

Our request of the archbishop is based on the most basic of Catholic teachings: That the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is both a reminder of Christ's ultimate sacrifice for us by His death on the Cross, and also an opportunity for Catholics, with contrite hearts, to come to Him and receive Him in the sacrament of the Eucharist. The Mass is not a political rally; the Mass is not a public relations event; the Mass is not an "extreme makeover" for an intransigent, pro-abortion politician.

Perhaps, as our public statements on this tragic state of affairs settles in on the minds and hearts of those closest to Congresswoman Pelosi, she herself will realize that her choice of venue is more scandalous than it is anything else. Perhaps that still, quiet voice within will invite her to cancel her public forays into a Mass that she might otherwise have attended without the public hoopla and without the disingenuous statements of those who work for her.

Perhaps, as Archbishop Wuerl wrote, Pelosi will come on her knees before the Lord, publicly repudiate her support for abortion, human embryonic stem cell research and other crimes against life, and "respond to God's loving call with a 'yes' of faith."

If not, we hope and pray that Archbishop Wuerl intervenes for the sake of every believing Catholic, young and old, who knows that every single abortion is an act of murder. For the sake of all those who believe, we beseech the archbishop to act in defense of Christ, regardless of headlines or public image. We need his leadership and, as a Catholic grandmother myself, I realize that Pelosi desperately needs his moral guidance as well.

Why are these pro-abortion zealots allowed to publicly participate in the Eucharest? Where are the (arch)bishops and priests on this issue? This is a grave scandal, aided and abetted by too many “go-along-to-get-along” clergy. The same here in Washington state with Gov. Gregoire, and Sens. Murray and Cantwell – all three are pro-abortion zealots who cause grave scandal, yet the local priests and the archbishop are all silent. It is disgraceful.

When I saw the AP article on Pelosi in my local paper, I was ill and almost embarassed to be a Catholic of that is the public representative of our faith. It is time for Catholic Bishops in the US to follow the leader of Bishop Weigandi in sacramento and Bruzenski (sp?) in Nebraska, in excommunicating those who flaunt their disobedience.

There does seem to be some mistaken notion that Vatican II required hierarchy at every level to set aside their backbones; not to mention place in Magisterium, etc.

It is a travesty, yes, but I imagine that they would cite feeling beleaguered from every side on this issue – abortion, and all its repercussions. Yet, in each case, a solid reading, reflection and essaying on Humanae Vitae would help them relocate their spines.

In fact, do so ourselves . . . that is, acquire Humanae Vitae, read it thoroughly, like thrice; reflect on it as it means to YOU (and me and all, of course); and then essay on your thoughts and mail copies of the encyclical and your essay to your ordinary and pastor.

Maybe you can make it a prayer-group apostolate-ministry, with said group built specifically to pray for the Church hierarchy about its Magisterial role, enthusiasm, energy and obligations. Your combined essays would have impact you may never know about – until you get Home to our Father and His Son.

I oh so very much agree with you. I don’t understand why some bishops have their heads in the sand or look the other way. I couldn’t believe John Kerry would be given communion, flaunting his belief in abortion, but who am I?

Sometimes bishops and priests turn their heads the other way instead of condemning such acts. I assisted the deacon of our church in teaching a confirmation class. I was astonished when he said that Jesus did not die for our sins because one cannot suffer for the sins of another. I told my priest. He said that surely I had misunderstood the deacon. I had not misunderstood, I had a detailed discussion with the deacon about it. He did not change his stance.

In my granddaughter’s school, the nun teacher of religion told the class there was not a Noah’s Ark and that Adam and Eve, also never existed. When confronted, the priest agreed with the teacher.

I posted the gist of my prior post to the ‘Faith and Life’ forum as There does seem to be some mistaken notion – I think it has greater possibilities than any can think, right now.

Yes, yes – so many catechists actually seem to more religiously read meeting minutes from ‘the Jesus Seminar’ than solid Scriptural commentaries. I may agree that we have no direct evidence of much of what the Bible expresses – but, it sure beats whatever else anyone else offers. Our God provided of Adam and Eve, of Noah, and that which expresses His own love in His Kingdom – I have not found any other information that so lifts me and dignifies both my life and my death.

    Vivat Jesus!

The author’s hope that Pelosi will realize the scandal and error of this impending circus is in vain. Pelosi is an arrogant, willful and conceited woman who has no reservations about flaunting her “Catholicity” and the possibility of leading others into grave sin and error. She is a consummate example of the sin of pride and her “faith” reeks of Call To Action Catholicism.

You see, she has to satisfy those whom she REALLY serves: the adoring media whores, feminists and other engineers of the culture of death who reconcile Catholicism with their politics instead of the other way around. She thinks, “Hmm, I have to appear Catholic…but not too much.” Archbishop Wuerl should direct the Celebrant of that Mass to explicitly DENY Communion to Pelosi and her sycophants.

And when will American Catholics come to realize that the Democratic Party they grew up with (pre-1960’s) DOES NOT exist any more? Many in the GOP are no better. Stop voting for these people! America is sliding over a cliff and I tremble for my country. The next two years will be quite revealing politically and otherwise.

For the past three years, MDRTL and the Knights of Columbus have been installing a 721 Cross Memorial (Cemetery of the Innocents) in Maryland, specifically in St. Mary, Charles, Prince George, and Wicomico counties. “721” represents the number of unborn babies slain every working hour of every working day (1.5 million divided by 52 weeks, divided by 40 hour work week).

Although there have been 60 installations with thirty-five churches participating, it has been my experience that a large number of the laity in the parishes themselves (not just the priest) find this Memorial disturbing and confrontational. Indeed, many other parishes have said “No.”

In other words, there are many “Catholics,” who agree with Pelosi, Kennedy, Kerry, Guiliani, etc., etc. What to do? To start, I think we need to “publicly” pray for these folks at Mass, and name names. Finally, we need to pray for the 28,800 babies killed EVERY week. God bless this effort. Jim/ Great Mills, MD

Jim of – Arkansas? – Could not your state accede to lifting a Sioux-Kansas-Quapaw Indian name (via the Ohio Algonquians) by which to be known? But, then, it is so wonderfully geographic, isn’t it? Well, I do understand – I borrow of the Latin to give dimension beyond being simply ‘Warren Jewell’. Uh . . . if you stumble into a Tridentine Latin-based Mass, you won’t be fleeing from it, I hope.

Who of us needs no prayer? But prayer is not enough. For instance – when your federal representaive sends one of his franking-privileged look-at-me mailings to you, do you sit down and write a letter asking him why he mentions nothing of his pro-life spirits and position? OR, congratulating him when he does make pro-life his own? Even granting that I KNOW that my representative is little more than a rubber-stamp liberal by voting record, I give him the benefit of the doubt every time. Of course, he never answers – ‘twould be expecting very much . . .

Of more than prayer – Jim of Great Mills, Maryland – do you all, who appreciate the parishes who build the memorials to the unborn dead, take a Sunday AM to get to their churches between their Masses, and put a buck and a note of appreciation in their poor box? Makes for a nice family drive, of a Sunday after Mass and on the way to breakfast. Bring the kids in to help find the poor box and genuflect before the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle, in all their Sunday-best reverent innocence. When the news of twenty-plus extra bucks for the poor, each buck with a note of thanks and commendation gets around among pastors, some have to take a second look at their ‘No’.

Our Lord and Savior told St. Faustina “Call upon My mercy on behalf of sinners; I desire their salvation. When you say this prayer, with a contrite heart and with faith on behalf of some sinner, I will give him the grace of conversion. This is the prayer:
“O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of Mercy for us, I trust in You.”

I believe if we pray for Nancy Pelosi and all others, using the prayer Jesus gave us, we will see results!
