Nudity, Nuns, and Equinox Gyms: Just Edgy Enough

Equinox fitness clubs are rolling out a series of new ads that are being displayed in its gyms, as well as in publications like Boston Magazine. One of the "Happily ever" ads features attractive young women dressed as nuns in habit sketching a naked man; all are staring at his crotch.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:

"Twenty years ago, the ad agency that Equinox recently acquired to develop this ad, Fallon Worldwide, lost $22 million when major U.S. corporations stopped doing business with the company: an ugly series of racist and sexist incidents involving senior Fallon employees set off a firestorm. It is not likely that Fallon's latest overture will garner the same reaction, though it makes one wonder why Equinox didn't choose a more reliable ad agency.

"In any event, this patently stupid ad that Equinox is floating suggests that it must hype its edgy image in order to compete. That's too bad-apparently their targeted demographic group isn't lured by the prospect of more barbells and fruit bars. Hence, the need to rip off Catholic imagery in a sophomoric soft-porn ad.

"Of course, Equinox could have asked Fallon to replace the nuns with Islamic women covered with veils. But that was probably too edgy, even for these trendy types. Guess there are some envelopes that no one wants to push these days. How telling."

    Good point, Bill!  Substituting Islamic women would never fly, but they think nothing of mocking Catholics.

    Of course, in the danish cartoon controversy the media chose to not show the pictures even though they were related to the story. So what is the difference?

    Just remember what Jesus says in the gospels about those who cause others to stumble, "it would be better for them to have a millstone tied around their necks and be thrown into the depths of the sea…"  Everyone who enjoys taking shots at Catholics and other Christians alike will have their time before God too.

    Maybe it is time to adopt the"fatwa" approach! I think not, as judaism and catholicism have been doing it mostly right for thousands of years and the "artistes" that come up with this crap are gone before they are remembered.

    I went to the link provided above thebostonchannel.com and they have a poll that asks Catholics whether they are offended or not and there are MORE Catholics that are NOT offended or DON'T KNOW if they are offended!!  And we wonder why it is so easy to mock Catholics?  We don't stand up for ourselves.  I think too many have a "get over it" attitude and we let this stuff go on.

    Catalina, I do remember wht our Lord said, but I think that doesn't mean we catholics should roll over when this kind of insult comes into play. If they were burning down churches and convents and schools, I'm sure we'd all rise up to be heard.

    This calls for the same condemnation. Catholics are always the butts of jokes (if this can qualify for one), most often times, tasteless ones
