God Can Defend Himself!

Matthew 5:14

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.

It is worth noting that our Lord did not say, “A city set on a hill should not be hid.”  Rather, he made it clear that such a city cannot be hid.  Some people are very interested these days in “defending the Faith.”  But, strictly speaking, the Faith needs no defense.  It can take care of itself.  Defenses of God by we puny humans are something like the defense of a lion by an ant.  God is.  The fact that various clever or foolish humans have devised ingenious ways of making it seem as though God is not matters no more than that special effects men in Hollywood can fool the eye for a few minutes.  The fact remains that God is, whatever we say, do or think about that.  Does this mean that we ought not “defend the Faith” when it is opposed?  Certainly not!  We are to proclaim the truth so that those who need to hear it are not snookered by the lies of the world.  But we are not to proclaim it as though our defenses of the Truth are saving our helpless God.  He is not helpless: he is the truth and glory beyond all knowledge.  We are his servants, not his saviors.  And his light, in the end, cannot be hid.

Yes, Almighty God can defend himself. However, here on earth it falls to us to defend faith and morals.

The latter, moral standards, have been in free fall for decades in this country. Consider the out of wedlock birth rate. It has gone from five percent of babies born in the USA in 1960 to 40 percent as of 2007. In my state of Washington, for example, we are on the verge of same-sex marriage, and have already adopted euthanasia and unlimited abortion.

Clearly morals require defending, or rather restoring. God will not do the fighting for us.
