Catholic Group says “Archbishop Burke Right to Deny Communion to Giuliani”

Fidelis, a national Catholic advocacy group, applauded the courageous decision by St. Louis' Archbishop Raymond Burke to deny Holy Communion to Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, and all pro-abortion politicians running for president, regardless of their political party.

The Associated Press is reporting that Archbishop Raymond Burke would deny Holy Communion to Rudy Giuliani and any pro-abortion Catholic running for president. Four Catholic Democrats running for president also support abortion, include: Senator Christopher Dodd, Senator Joe Biden, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

When asked if he would deny the sacrament to Giuliani, Burke responded, "If the question is about a Catholic who is publicly espousing positions contrary to the moral law and I know that person knows it, yes I would," said Burke. "It is a cause of concern for me and for all bishops to find ourselves in this situation."

Fidelis President Brian Burch commented, "Faithful Catholics across the United States are thrilled to see Archbishop Burke courageously stand up for the dignity of every human person by confronting yet another Catholic pro-abortion politician. Candidate Giuliani has shamelessly supported the unlimited right to abortion, including partial-birth abortion, and has even vowed to fund abortion with taxpayer dollars, while campaigning as a devoted Catholic."

"The Archbishop's courageous decision to deny Communion to pro-abortion Catholic Rudy Giuliani — a Republican — proves that this not a partisan issue," said Burch.

"The Archbishop's bold defense of the Church should be a wake up call for Catholics across the country. Sadly, several recent polls still show that many Catholics are unaware of the pro-abortion positions espoused by Giuliani. Any politician looking to win the support of Catholic voters should be held to a high standard, and that includes a commitment to defend the most vulnerable and innocent in our society, particularly the unborn," continued Burch.

Fidelis is a national Catholic-based advocacy organization based in Chicago. Fidelis America, the political arm of Fidelis, recently published newspaper advertisements informing Iowa voters of Rudy Giuliani's three decades of support for abortion.

    Hooray for Archbishop Burke! Maybe his outspoken fidelity to Church teaching will encourage some of his more reticent brother bishops to follow suite.  

    With regards to Rudy G. another problem arises. Even if Giuliani was ardently pro-life, any Catholic priest or bishop would be barred from giving him Holy Communion on the grounds that he divorced his second wife (Vagina Monologues star Donna Hanover) and is now cohabiting with a third woman, a Judith somebody-or-other (claims to have "married" her — Mother Church says otherwise).

    I, for one, will go to a third party if he wins the nomination. But he won't win.

    The Church should continue to speak out against voting for any candidate (and name every one) that is pro-abortion whether they are Catholic or not. This is the only way to make it clear to ALL politicians that abortion is murder and condemned by the Church. Every priest should make a point of letting his flock know with certainty that abortion is murder and is condemned by the Church (with forgiveness in repentance for those who have had or been a part to abortion).

    I Love the Catholic Church, I love them because they Love and defend Christ, they defend Him by telling the Truth, they are the voice of Christ in a world that increasingly turns a deaf ear… so we need to speak up just a little bit louder. And abortion is not the only issue, there are others such as homosexuality, marriage, euthanasia, pornography. I heard said that the Catholic Church is the last stand in a world where everyone else is caving in. There are still others who are fighting the good fight but the battle is heating up. The Catholic Church has a two thousand year history of enduring persecution for the faith and I know this age will not discourage it’s continued perseverance. For Christ promises us that He will preserve the Church for Himself.

    I would commend Gulianni on his second divorce and not ban him (t.i.c.). Then again I'm always and frequently on the penance receiving side of the Confessional so why would I matter. I'm with zephyr on the unlikely nomination of Gulliani. I don't care if he could beat Hillary or not. It would just be a political win.

    It was encouraging to see the leadership that Rudy displayed during the aftermath of 9/11 but disheartening to see the lack of leadership that he is publicly displaying by not living out of his faith and the beliefs of the Catholic Church. He is defiantly sending mixed signals to those who watch and scrutinize the Catholic Church so closely. The Catholic Church isn't a buffet where one can pick and choose what they want to believe and ignore the other teachings. I commend Archbishop Burke for denying Gulliani Holy Communion because of this. Archbishop Burke is living out his apostolate by sending the correct message.

    Although, I cannot give Gulliani my vote, I can give him my prayers for conversion.

    This is not the first time Archbishop Burke has been courageous and true to Catholic teaching. I applaud him and all of the clergy who are not persuaded by the “avoiding scandal” argument. How loving an action it would be if the clergy in D.C. would follow suit. We need truth, THE truth, not naby-pamby kum by ya Catholicism.

    we can pray for a conversion for him – and we should – notice how many pro-aborts are dems

     

    i know of people who prayed for geraldo's conversion…
