Joe Biden Ridiculed for Wearing Ashes

Fox News analyst Bob Beckel today criticized Vice President Joe Biden for wearing ashes on TV; today is Ash Wednesday and Biden is Catholic.

In the middle of a discussion on President Obama’s stimulus plan, Beckel gratuitously said, “Sorry about laughing, but I looked at Joe Biden’s forehead, and I know it is Ash Wednesday, but I’m not sure I would wear that ash on the air. Anyway….”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue wasn’t amused:

Bob Beckel’s admonishing remark, “I’m not sure I would wear that ash on the air,” makes us wonder whether it is the public display of ashes he finds risible, or the religion that sports them.

In any event, there is no record of Beckel ever lecturing a Jew about wearing a yarmulke on TV or a Muslim wearing a turban. Must be something about Catholicism that bothers this guy. We’d love to know what it is. At the very least, a clarification about what he meant is in order.

I hope Joe Biden realizes what the sign of the ashes is all about and turns away from his pro abortion stance …

I wear my ashes until my next shower. I try hard to live my Catholic faith inwardly and outwardly. I fail. I repent. I try again. I had a gut reaction to Biden’s ashes (long before Beckel’s ill thought out, unclarified remark) which troubled me and still does. I’m conflicted about it. My gut reaction? My immediate thought? I can’t unthink it now and it is so unchristian and judgmental, but here goes. Just prior to the cameras rolling, Biden’s handlers put mascara on his forehead to pander to pro-abortion Catholics. There, I said it. (Forgive me Lord.) I haven’t even told my wife! Biden’s behavior, in so many ways, is embarrassing to those of us who try to be faithful to Catholic teaching. He confuses people. I doubt it, but maybe, just maybe, that was Beckel’s gut reaction too. But he ought to tell us. Thanks Bill Donohue and Catholic League. You give me courage.

Obama has used Caesar’s “divide and conquer” approach to great affect.

By his administrative appointments (so many pro-choice Catholics) and statements (Henry Knox’s unbridled bashing of B16 comments on AIDS), Obama is doing what he can to divide American Catholics from the Pope and true doctrine.

The most pro-abortion President in history (and the first to be inaugurated without a Bible) was elected because the majority of American Catholics (including many Priests and Bishops) voted for him.

We must stand up and support groups like Catholic League.
