She’s a Baby!

The pro-life movement needs us to speak out—with our votes, and with our voices. In a culture that spreads lies — that abortion helps the mother, that an “unwanted” child wouldn’t want to be born, anyway, and that the mother only carries a “blob of tissue” in her womb — we are needed to help spread the truth about abortion. And we can start with the most obvious truth: that what the pro-abortion side conveniently calls “the product of conception”, an embryo, or a fetus is really a baby.

At conception, this person inside the mother’s womb is already set to be either a tiny boy or a tiny girl. By five weeks, its heart is beating beneath its mother’s. It’s a baby.[1]

By nine weeks, he has fingers that he can curl around something placed in his palm. Later, that “something” will be a mother’s or father’s finger. He’s a baby.

By ten weeks, she will begin to develop Mother’s deep brown eyes — or Daddy’s hazel ones — or great-great grandma’s gray-blues. By fourteen weeks, she can move her hands and might even suck her thumb. She’s a baby.

By fifteen weeks, the mother might feel flutters and wiggles inside her womb. The mother doesn’t choose when the baby will move. It’s not her choice. The little human being growing inside her has a mind of his own. He’s a baby.

By sixteen weeks, this tiny person can get a case of the hiccups. By nineteen weeks, she sleeps in her favorite position, wakes, and sleeps again. She’s a baby.

By twenty-three weeks, he can hear his mother’s and father’s voices reading, singing, and talking to him lovingly. He’s a baby.

By twenty-four weeks, the baby is considered viable. But even before that, when she is still within the protection of her mother’s womb, she begins to learn the sound of her mother’s voice. She sucks her thumb. Her heart beats steadily. She wakes and sleeps. She moves on her own. She needs nutrition.

She’s a baby. And giving her another name in an attempt to make her sound less cute, cuddly, and dependent on our love, care, and protection will not change that.

To women considering abortion — there are better options. There are crisis pregnancy centers and ministries and churches full of people who want to help you and your baby. And there are families everywhere who would love nothing more than to give your baby a loving home should you choose not to raise him or her.  Don’t be afraid of embarrassment. Nine months of open embarrassment in front of peers — or even intense pressure from beloved family members for a time — is nothing compared to a lifetime of guilt forcing you to hide and hurt. The way your friends and family treat you because of the baby is their choice, and they will be held accountable for their treatment of you in the end. You will be held accountable for the choices you make regarding the safety and care of the baby in your womb.

To any woman who is already hurting from an abortion…you are a victim of abortion, too. There is healing for you. There is Project Rachel, a Catholic ministry created to help women who have suffered abortions to heal. You can find it at www.hopeafterabortion.com . There is also the National Office of Post-Abortion Reconciliation and Healing; they can be contacted for help at www.noparh.org . God is merciful, and He loves you deeply.  Forgiveness and healing are there for the asking.

For anyone who considers voting for pro-choice politicians in the future: if pro-choice politicians are elected to office, more women will be lied to — told the tiny, growing people inside their wombs are not really babies — when those babies and their mothers are at their most vulnerable point. More babies will be lost, and more mothers will be wounded because of the actions of elected pro-choice politicians. We hold the lives of those babies — and the well-being of their mothers — in our hands every time we go to the polls.

I’ve experienced about 9 months of derison while pregnant with this, my 12 child. I’ll be 47 when the baby is born, and I still feel the pressure and the embarrasment of this pregnancy. I can only imagine what a young, single woman must experience.

I stay close to the Lord in prayer and reflect on his Passion. I know that I am not responsible for the smug comments of strangers and FAMILY members. The people closest to me, who should have been supportive, both mentally and physically, will be held accountable, as I will for how I respond to them and to my pregnancy.

It has been a tough time and sometimes I wish this baby weren’t here or that I could place it for adoption. Nobody would notice.

So, regardless of your status, pregancy has a huge impact on women’s lives. We need to be supported to be strong. All people need to know, as Lori Ann said, that they can only control THEIR response. God will take care of the rest.

How times have changed. In the pre-modern era you would have been considered extremely blessed! Twelve of course is a very significant number; you would have cause for boasting. Big families are just another casualty of the “culture of death”. May God richly bless you.

Elkabrikir, God has blessed you abundantly. I am happy for you! It is sad that you are surrounded by people who don’t see the blessings or who have bought the culture’s “bologna”. The good news is that, as you know, this time of trial (created by adults’ bad behavior, and not by the pregnancy itself), which encourages you to stay close to Our Lord, is your path to a beautiful crown in Heaven…and twelve children who love you here on Earth! I only wish you were surrounded by people who would encourage you to rejoice. You have great reason to!

The laws of man let Elkabrikir decide for herself whether or not she was up to a pregnancy later in her life, and that’s how it should be.

Derision for being pregnant? At any age, it’s no one’s business of yours. People should keep their negativity to themselves.

However, I’ve got a few issues with this article. I agree that we need to take the misinformation out of the abortion issue, but the idea that abortion can help the mother is true. It can help her physically, emotionally, economically. Yes, some women come to regret their decisions to abort, but most of them don’t.

Crisis pregnancy centers cause more problems than they create. They’re full of misinformation about abortion’s health risks and about pregnancy prevention. Planned Parenthood is doing way more to bring the abortion rate down than all the CPCs in the country.

As to whether or not an embryo is a baby, it’s perfectly valid to think of it as one, but it’s also perfectly valid to think of it as an embryo. Developing humans grow gradually. A nine-week embryo might have enough neural development for its fingers to flex, but it doesn’t have enough to have thoughts or experiences, not even to the extent that a newborn baby does, and those are the things that make us human.

When was the last time you looked at a crucifix, for on it hangs an unwanted God terminated by the leadership because it help them physically, emotionally and economically.

Are you saying that the leadership was justified in the termination of this unwanted God?

Is not this the intent of Satan all along, the termination of an unwanted God?

Nazism is the termination of an unwanted, are you say the Nazi were justified in terminating Jews?

Is not all this termination of the unwanted brought about by Satan, and his desire to terminate Jesus?

DRF, thank you for commenting! I am finding that if you look for pro-abortion research and numbers, if you look hard enough, you can probably find them…but there is plentiful evidence to refute those numbers. There are organizations like Silent No More that are filled with women who do regret their abortions immensely. Every woman who comes to the Rachel’s Vineyard program is a woman who has found that she can’t live comfortably with the choice she made to abort her child and is seeking healing. Why would someone need healing for something that wasn’t a problem?

To be honest, I have to say that…well, my brain is tiny (and growing more so every minute!). I would like to be able to type out facts and figures that would instantly convince everyone that the pro-life side is telling the truth and the pro-choice side is using unreliable data. But I suspect I am not the person to do that here. All I know is that God is a loving God. And He creates people out of His great love for them. Each and every one of us is created because He loves us. And when abortion happens–when even ONE abortion happens, someone God loves very much–loves enough to create and place in “the warm, safe shelter of a mother’s womb”–is destroyed. Someone God meant to change the world will never get that chance.

Again ,thank you for your comments. God bless you!

Here is something I think would be helpful. If we all learned just a couple of facts about a baby’s in utero development and when we meet and are talking to a pregnant woman we can say soemthing like, “Oh, you are 9 weeks pregnant. Did you know your baby already can curl his tiny fingers around an object placed in his palm?” You never know who might be listening to that.

Yes, DRF, developing humans grow gradually. But they are never anything other than human. What else would an embryo be? Celery? A mouse? It is always human. And if it is always human, it is always a human being. It’s kind of silly to say that there exists a human who is not a human being.

I am a nurse that has worked with many young women contemplating this decision. More times than not abortion does not help these young women. The come to regret and suffer many mental and physical repercussions from the abortion inculding denial, guilt, depression, post abortion psychosis, PTSD, infertility, infection, hemorrhage, and even suicide.

As far as determining if the baby is viabile/human….some states allow Abortion up until 25 weeks or so… did you know that the youngest premature child on record is at 21 weeks 5 days…that was in 1987…and that child (that by some laws was not viable or human) is now a happy and healthy adult.

Your definition of human bothers me somewhat….to say that what defines us as human is the ability to have thoughts and experiences is somewhat absurd. There are adults in this world who have conditions which limit them to having a beating heart, and maybe moving a part of their body, all the while needing assistance to breathe….all of which a baby does while in utero….by your definition of a human, these living adults are not human as well….

Lori…I am very proud of you and very proud of this article and agree with you 100%….both mentally, emotionally, and medically

DRF I don’t know what you mean by “the laws of man” is the factor in me being pregant “later in life”. However, my decision to say “this is my body given for you (God, my husband, my baby)”
has always been a statement of complete faith and trust in Divine Providence. It is only Jesus’ love and power that has sustained me as I “walk on the water” of mothering any number of children (regardless of how old I am.)

If it were up to me/nature, I may have been too afraid to parent any children. Only grace has given me the courage to be open to the infinite blessings God has wanted to give me through the eternal souls, who are my children.

The point of my first post was to emphasize that many woman feel vulnerable during pregnancy despite optimal conditions for maternity (I consider myself in that category.) If I can feel alienated from society, etc…(refer to first post), how horrible must it be for somebody who is actually in a crisis situation? (I refer even to women with poor prenatal diagnosis)

A humane society has compassion on (suffers with) the vulnerable. Abortion says, “leave me alone. I don’t want to trouble with YOUR problem created by the ‘laws of man’”.

    Grow in compassion!

    Human, become who you are!

    “Passio Christi, conforta me.”

DRF, I wanted to follow up on what Mary said. I have to disagree with you on what makes us human. There are elephants who can create paintings with their trunks…but they are not human. There are non-human species of primates who can communicate by sign language. We can assume that there must be some sort of “thought” there to enable that. They may have thoughts, but they are not human, either. What makes us human is that we are created in the image and likeness of God, and that can be no less true for babies in the womb than for the rest of us. In fact, in their womb-protected innocence, they might retain more of that link to Him than do those of us who have been living outside the womb for some time. Preborn babies are no less human than we are.

I also wanted to respond to the claim that abortion can help mothers. Scripture assures us that children are a blessing from the Lord. When in history has anyone denied themselves a God-given blessing and come out the better for it? How can anyone say that a mother who gives up a blessing God wanted to give her will be better off for it? It can’t be so. We are healthiest when we receive all of the blessings He so generously gives us. Denying ourselves His blessings causes harm, not good.

    Elkabrikir –

Congratulations on your newest little one!

I just had #11 at age 42, and, sadly, I understand what you’ve written well for my experience is similiar. Yes, it does show us that we must support vulnerable mothers and their babies/children no matter the situation.

I’ll pray you have a speedy, safe, and blessed delivery.

thanks Michelle. As you know, the prayers of the faithful sustain us.

Congratulations to you, too! It’s all a joy. A joy the world/nature can never understand and therefore, never experience.
