PLENARY INDULGENCE: PRAYER FOR THE SICK: FEBRUARY 9-11 (Our Lady of Lourdes)

From the Vatican's Decree Granting the Indulgence for the World Day of the Sick:

The Church "earnestly desires that the annual observance of the World Day of the Sick will become an effective catechesis of the teaching … on the value and function of pain." "A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful that, with the usual conditions — sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the Holy Father's intentions — and with a spirit detached from all sin, take part with devotion, next Feb. 11, in the city of Seoul or in any other place established by the ecclesiastical authority, in a sacred ceremony celebrated to implore God for the objectives of the 15th World Day of the Sick.

"The faithful who in public hospitals or private homes assist the sick with charity as 'good Samaritans,' especially the incurable or terminal and, because of their service cannot take part in the ceremony indicated earlier, will obtain the same gift of the plenary indulgence, if on that day they generously give at least an hour of their charitable assistance to the sick as if they did it to Christ the Lord himself, having their spirit detached from all sin and the intention to comply, as soon as possible, with the conditions needed to obtain the plenary indulgence."

"The faithful who because of illness, advanced age or any other similar reason cannot take part in the indicated ceremony, will obtain the plenary indulgence, on the condition that, having the spirit detached from all sin and intending to fulfill as soon as possible the usual conditions, on that day united to the Holy Father, take part spiritually with desire in the above-said celebration and offer to God, through the Virgin Mary, 'Health of the Sick,' their physical and spiritual sufferings." The decree "grants the plenary indulgence to all the faithful, from Feb. 9 to 11, every time that with a contrite heart they address to the merciful God devout prayers to implore the above said objectives in assistance to the sick, in particular of the incurable or terminal."

The healings at Lourdes take place mostly during the daily Procession of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament.

    Ave Maria!

    I  had the grace of going on pilgrimage to Lourdes in 2004.  What an incredible place! So beautiful and peaceful. Yes, there are the stores and everything all around but the sanctuary area is lovely and peaceful–well, okay, not so peaceful when there are more than 40,000 people there!!!

    The first day I was there was September 8th and it was Our Lady's birthday.  We had two priests with us and we were to have Mass every day.  So I asked the priests what time Mass would be.  It was about 5pm and they told me we could not fit it in that day. I was stunned!  We could fit in supper and everything but not Mass? 

     I left my husband to unpack and found my way to the Basilica.  It was hot and here I was, a middle-aged lady, rushing about trying-first of all- to find the sanctuary as we were about a mile away and I got a little lost.  But I found it.  I asked when was Mass; there HAD to be Mass, it was Lourdes!  And they said there was no Mass but then it meant only no English Mass but the next Mass in French would be at 6:30. Yeah!  I ran back to the hotel and told my husband I would be missing supper and ran back down the hill.  Mass was in the lower Rosary Basilica.  I sat on the side in the front row and wept through the Mass. I was in Lourdes and it was Our Lady's birthday!!!  I was SO happy to be at the holy Mass. I was the only one from the pilgrimage to be at Mass that day.

    I loved the early mornings best.  I would leave my sleeping husband and walk down to pray my morning prayers and Office at the Basilica. I would be there for the first Mass at the grotto.  I could get the holy water and everything before the crowds showed up. So peaceful. I loved it. One morning another lady from the hotel had the same idea and we walked together. She was German and spoke no English and I speak no German. And guess what? We prayed the rosary together!  One would pray half the Hail Mary in our language and the other would finish in hers. How about that?

    At night we would be in the rosary procession! Wow. an incredible experience.  Thousands singing and praying. On the last night I got invited to be in the English choir.  And I do not sing!  But the Brother and Sisters were invited and I guess because I was third order, I got invited as well.  WOW! To be up front and watch the piazza fill with the lights of 40,000 candles was the most incredible experience.

    Healings still occur and mostly during the procession of the Blessed Sacrament. Our Lady always brings souls to her Son.
