Kathy Griffin’s Fans Are a Sick Lot

Catholic League president Bill Donohue spoke today regarding the controversy surrounding Kathy Griffin's Emmy acceptance speech:

"When Griffin roared ‘Suck it, Jesus!' in front of her Tinseltown peers, she ‘drew laughs,' according to the Hollywood Reporter. Does this not prove the point the Catholic League has long made about Hollywood's palpable hostility to Christians?

"New York magazine gave her ‘kudos' for her ‘joyfully blasphemous rant,' going so far as to gush, ‘thank God we can always count on Kathy Griffin to inject a little energy into a boring awards show.' But the same tabloid found nothing joyful about a remark that got Imus fired, labeling it one of the ‘Great Moments in Bigoted Slurs.' Different strokes for different folks?

"Others also shared New York's brand of humor. The website of the Arizona Daily Star called Griffin's words ‘interesting' and ‘refreshing,' and a reporter for the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Fox affiliate said her ‘raunchy' quip was ‘kind of funny.' More revealing was the creation of a website, SuckItJesus.com, that was launched by her fans: they want her ‘mild, and comedic' speech to be aired on E!

"Perhaps the most defining response came from Ellen Johnson, president of American Atheists. In a news release, Johnson called for a boycott of the Emmy awards. Distraught that the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, a private organization, is choosing not to offend 85% of Americans by broadcasting an anti-Christian rant, Johnson wailed, ‘this is something I'd expect in a nation like Saudi Arabia or Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.' Someone needs to give her a copy of the First Amendment — it protects our right to protest objectionable speech.

"Finally, while we are pleased to learn that Griffin's celebrity stock has plummeted as a result of her scripted speech, we also know that there are some very sick people out there who love it every time some bigot takes a shot at Christianity. To wit: the phone calls and messages we've received are proof positive of how visceral the hatred is, much of it aimed directly at the Catholic League. No matter, at the end of the day, Griffin lost."

    If she had said "Suck it, Allah" (or some equally witty/clever remark slamming another religion), it never would have been tolerated.  Maybe if she had some talent and wit, she would be able to come up with clever jokes that don't involve bigotry.

    I don't think I know who Kathy Griffin is, but, I can only surmise that she is so lacking in self-esteem that she needs to find a "scapegoat" to bash only to make herself appear other than what she is, a individual in need of our prayers and forgiveness.

    I just posted a request on Kathy Griffin's site asking her to go on record saying "Suck it, Allah!" What do you think the chances of her doing so are?

    If the past is any indication, in a few years Ms. Griffin will convert to Catholicism.  Look at Sinead O'Connor, Anne Rice … God has a way of working on these sorts of people.  When I see these kinds of public outbursts I sense the Holy Spirit knocking on a stoney heart.

    That He does but one thing is for sure–our Catechesis is in terrible disarray.  Someone forgot to give Anne Rice the memo that Christianity is opposed to abortion and voting for a pro-abortion candidate isn't godly.

    Sinead O'Connor had issue with the Church, she tore up JP2's picture, a venial sin. I don't know what Anne Rice did. Ms Griffin will have to work extremely hard at conversion because to utter that kind of a statement on the air is either a mental deficiency, drug induced or not, or demonic possession. She's getting dangerously close to blasphamy against the Holy Spirit if she hasn't already sold her soul.

    She uttered it because she was pandering to the lowest common denominator.(Because sacrificing God can make you money)

     

    She won't say "Suck it Mohammed" because she would probably be killed. (Because killing your critics is obviously the way of God)

     

    I find it interesting the way that some groups react (say pro-abortionists or more than a few Muslims) when they are attacked with words (violence, damning rhetoric, and threats of annihilation) versus how others (Christians) just take it on the chin, or the cheek, so to speak.

     

    Good wins over evil because good perseveres. Say "Suck it pro-death culture" and you are repudiated or worse. The violent reprisal is soon (relatively speaking) spent and since nothing surrounded it's core, nothing is left. As for my view on Islam, well…they have the right God, but ever since they left the tent, they've been on the wrong track. So now saying "Suck it Mohammed" does warrant a death sentence according to most Muslims.

     

    Say "Suck it Jesus" and He says "Disappointing. I'll still be here when you come to your senses."

     

    I don't think it is wrong to fight bigotry and prejudice. I have had the chance to argue and defend on several occasions. Hopefully I didn't tank the job too poorly. For me, though, I prefer to spend my time helping others and let that be my answer to a culture that increasingly has to strike out at the good around it.
