Designating Items for Donation

I came across this great tip for designating items for donation in the January 2007 issue of Martha Stewart Living Magazine. Martha's suggestion was to hang an extra-large tote bag in a closet or near the back door so that whenever you came across an item that you wanted to give away, you could simply put it in the tote bag. When the tote bag is full, you can arrange to drop it off at your favorite non-profit thrift shop.

    I'm not as upscale as Martha, so we just use a white kitchen size trash bag and keep one in progress to be filled where I fold laundry, so I can cull out the too small clothes that the kids will just keep cycling through ther laundry without wearing (you know, this doesn't fit, throw it on the floor, clean up room… everything on the floor into the laundry).  Since the white bags just never seem large enough in the kitachen anyway(no one notices the can is full until it's piled high and falling over), in our house they are giveaway bags.  When the bag is full, or we're cleaning up for company the bag gets thrown in the back of the van for future dropoff.

    Patrice,

    Thanks for this idea, which is a great one.  I used to do a lot more donating, but my husband has recently started requiring me to log and photograph donations for tax purposes.  I was thinking that I could just place a note pad near my tote bag and log the items as I put them in the bag (keep a running log), which would be much less daunting than trying to tackle the job all at once.  Our local Catholic Charities will even pick up items at my church, so now I'm motivated.  Thanks!
