Catholics Keeping Catholics in the Dark

At a family gathering I was shocked when I learned I had children and grandchildren planning to vote for Barack Obama.  Their reasoning was he was handsome, articulate, and “for change.”  Yet none of them could tell me what he stood for on any of the issues.  I thought the best way to educate them would be to draft a letter, detailing Obama’s stances on the important issues of the day.  However, I soon realized that I had a enough material for a book, and so, The Audacity of Deceit: Barack Obama’s War on American Values, was born.

What began as an effort to educate my children and grandchildren has become a popular tool for educating tens of thousands of Americans who will be voting for the first time.

When conducting my research, as a Roman Catholic, I was particularly troubled when I discovered the extreme positions Obama has taken on the issue of abortion.

Obama has stated that the very first thing he’d do as President would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, a federal law that would nullify all of the existing state restrictions on abortion.  This bill would codify abortion as a legal right at any stage of pregnancy, eliminate laws like parental notification, and also require that abortions receive taxpayer funding.

As a State Senator in Illinois, Obama almost single-handedly led a fight to deny emergency medical assistance to viable babies who were born alive after botched abortions.  These babies were being discarded after birth, literally left to die slow, painful deaths.  Obama fought to keep this practice in place.  Even the pro-abortion lobby group NARAL wouldn’t join Obama in his fight, perhaps thinking the practice was too barbaric even for them.

Now, as a veteran political consultant, I know politics is a nasty business and I am well acquainted with phenomenon of certain media outlets refusing to run paid advertising on the grounds that they don’t agree with the ad’s message.

However, I never expected to have paid advertising for my book censored by nearly every Catholic diocesan newspaper editor in the country.

The ad in question simply provides public polling information that shows a majority of Catholics are opposed to abortion.  The ad also provides Barack Obama’s well-documented stance on various issues pertaining to abortion.  The ad, and my book for that matter, do not specifically endorse any candidate, nor do they urge readers to vote for, or against, any candidate.

Despite all of this, only two dioceses out of 194 agreed to run this paid advertisement in their papers.

Though the ad was deemed to be in accordance with Catholic teaching by a Catholic review board that screens such ads prior to submitting them to individual Catholic publications, nearly every diocese rejected the ad for being “too political.”

While my paid advertisement is “too political,” many of these same dioceses had no problem publishing a piece disseminated by the Catholic News Service that praises Obama’s pro-abortion running mate, Senator Joe Biden, as an ally of the Church and its policy interests.

The Catholic News Service, however, did not publish the results of a poll taken by Zogby International that shows that 56 percent of Americans and 54 percent of Catholics think the actions of these editors is censorship.  Surprisingly, 63 percent of people who say they “never attend church” also consider it censorship.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops calls abortion an “intrinsic evil” and states:  “A Catholic cannot vote for a candidate who takes a position in favor of an intrinsic evil, such as abortion.”

Why would nearly every Catholic diocesan newspaper editor nationwide reject a non-partisan ad that simply promotes a book and seeks to educate Catholics on an issue of great importance to them?  This year, millions of young Catholics will be exercising their right to vote for the first time.  Don’t they deserve to be equipped with the knowledge they need to make an informed decision?

Archbishop Raymond Burke, the prefect of the Vatican’s Apostolic Signature, recently stated:  “It is simply ridiculous and wrong to try to silence a pastor, accusing him of interfering in politics so that he cannot do good to the soul of a member of his flock.”

What would the 55 Bishops, who have made public statements condemning Obama and Biden’s position on abortion, say about their editors silencing a member of the flock who seeks to do the same?

This IS shameful. I strongly suspect that the Spirit of the Age (which in the Church likes to call itself “The Spirit of Vatican II) is most deeply entrenched in official diocesan information media, and will defend its fiefs there with the most vigor.

I suspect there are many things “deeply entrenched in the official diocesan information media”. I agree that the issues that should be forming the Catholic consicience in critical areas like abortion is deeply lacking and we will likely pay a very high price for such poor judgement.

On the other hand, I don’t like to see Vatican II itself cast as the “Spirit of the Age”. I do believe there are many in the Church, determined to make it into something of their own creation, who use Vatican II as an excuse to promote ideas that Vatcican II never intended. Slowly, I believe, the tide is turning. Seminarians are being more properly educated and the truth is slowly but painfully being more revealed. There is nothing wrong with Vatican II but only with those who abused it for their own deceitful ends.

I think we always stand on dangerous ground when we reject the legitimate teaching of the Church for whatever reason. The Catechism and teachings of John Paul II and Bendedict the XVI are amaazing in their depth and clarity and both, as well as many well known preachers such as Fr. John Corpapi, are strongly supportive of Vatican II, that is, the Church herself.

I’m aware that there are those who suggest that the current Pope’s are part of a plot to destroy the Church and bring it under the unmbrella of a new world order which is clearly the work of the anti-Christ. These people are badly and sadly schismatic in their thinking which can only result in the establishment of the new world order and the hastening of the opportunity for the anti-Christ to proclaim himself as supreme leader of the new world order which is already so evident in the world.

Just as the new world order is determined to destroy the USA because as long as it has power it stands in the way, the same is true of destroying the Catholic Church. Of course, they can’t destroy the Catholic Church because it is established by God and protected by the Holy Spirit. Nonetheless, there is great tribulation ahead as God purifies His people. Lord have mercy.

I too am deeply concerned about F.O.C.A. It does indeed go farther than Roe V. Wade. It actually attacks our right to religious freedom as it forces us to support with our taxes an intrinsic evil that will kill millions of innocent babies if it is enacted. It is God’s Law that says we should not kill. To force us to live with government approved killing goes against the consciences of all who accept God’s rules of life. That politicians would support it is shameful. That people who claim to honor God would vote for these same politicians cries out to God for vengance.

    1. Michael, you missed the point of the article. This isn’t a blog for talking about new world order…just a response to the article.
    2. It’s a sad, sad state of affairs when our bishops and pastors (and assorted other parish personnel in charge) deny the importance and indeed the obligation to follow the Church teaching in regard to voting for a Presidential candidate who is unwaveringly pro-life. Unfortunately in our world, looks and slick-talk of no substance blind people and turn them from common-sense decisions to those made on superficial criteria. Voting pro-life has no party lines, no economic boundaries, no real burden so why are so many of the above-mentioned bishops etc. so afraid????? BE NOT AFRAID!!!!

Where do I go to protest these actions by so many dioceses? I’d really like to be able to let them know my outrage that they would choose to print something (seemingly) in support of Obama/Biden but not to advertise this book, which is an important tool for educating consciences!

Also, well said, Michael! I appreciate your support of the Church and her teaching, and I’m glad you offered your response not only to the article but to the conversation begun in the replies. It saved me from feeling the need to do so myself.

    CAN A CATHOLIC SUPPORT HIM?

On April 18, 2008, Douglas W. Kmiec was denied Communion at a Catholic Mass in Westlake, California. Ironically, Kmiec had been invited by a Catholic business group to give a dinner address on the Bishop’s teaching of “Faithful Citizenship.” Kmiec had served as head of the Office of Legal Counsel for both Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. But now, he found himself rejected by his faith–simply for endorsing the presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama.

In Can a Catholic Support Him?, Kmiec offers us a thoughtful explanation of his rationale. He addresses the difficult questions at the core of his decision: Can a Catholic support a Pro-Choice candidate? Can there be a reverence for life that embraces a larger set of values? How does a Catholic citizen balance his obligations to the Church and to community? In asking these questions, he challenges those whose partisan interests are provoking a false rift between the Catholic Church and the Democratic party.

This inquiry could hardly be more timely. Catholics have been on the side of the top vote-getter in the last nine presidential elections, and make up roughly one fourth of the electorate. This provocative book–at once a legal and religious treatise and a sincere and personal journey of faith will be an irreplaceable contribution to the conversation, in 2008 and beyond.

I am a Catholic writer for a diocesan newspaper, and have experienced what you, Mr. O’leary have too–surprise and disbelief that the life issue cannot properly be addressed in diocesan newspapers. I am probably sticking my neck out to say this, but I have been admonished not to get “too political” in my opinion writing, and had up until this point been uncensored in my previous work. What surprises me is that respecting life is a basic Catholic tenet–this is ‘Respect Life’ month, and yet I am not to get “too political”? It is not I who have made the “choice” to kill an unborn child a “political issue”, yet I am restrained from calling other Catholics to put the life issue first. I am frustrated that I cannot speak truth directly (not naming candidates outright even–just suggesting that life is a primary issue and should be at the TOP of every Catholic’s criteria for a good and just candidate. )

And so I’ll say here what I’ve been directed not to say elsewhere:

LIFE IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE. WITHOUT LIFE THERE ARE NO OTHER RIGHTS, RESPONSIBILITIES OR PRIVILEGES AS AN AMERICAN. IF A CANDIDATE WERE TO FIT MY VIEWS ON EVERY ISSUE EXCEPT THE LIFE ISSUE I WOULD NOT VOTE FOR HIM, SO IMPORTANT IS THE PRO-LIFE VIEW.

HOW COULD I TRUST A CANDIDATE TO HAVE LOGIC AND COMMON SENSE IN ANY ISSUE IF HE PROMOTED OR TOLERATED ABORTION? WHAT DIFFERENCE IS IT IF THE CHILD IS UNBORN, JUST BORN OR A TODDLER? IF A PERSON ‘PERSONALLY OPPOSES’ THE KILLING ANYONE, BE IT A ‘FETUS’ (JUST ANOTHER NAME FOR A PERSON, IN A DIFFERENT STAGE OF LIFE), A TODDLER, A CHILD, AN AGING ADULT…YET ALLOWS OTHERS THE ‘CHOICE’FOR OTHERS TO DO SO THAT PERSON IS NOT PRO-LIFE AT ALL AND SHOULD NOT GET THE CATHOLIC VOTE.

NOT ALL ISSUES ARE EQUAL. VOTE THE PRIMARY ISSUE THAT COMES BEFORE ANY OTHER–VOTE PRO-LIFE.

    Get down to basics.

Is it a mortal sin to vote for Obama, as he favors abortion?

Is it a mortal sin to vote for McCain as he favors abortion?

Should Catholics who are Democrats and will vote for Obama be excommunicated and/or denied the sacraments?

Should Catholics who are Republican and who will vote for McCain be excommunicated and/or denied the sacraments?

Should those who do not vote be excommunicated and/or denied the sacraments?

Should Republicans, as Prof Kmiec, who intend to vote for Obama be excommunicated and/or denied the sacraments?

Should the Catholic Church be deprived of charitable status as it effectively in a partisan way endorses McCain, often with out naming him for legal reasons?

Is the Church hypocritical for not excommunicating and Democratic politician?

    God bless,

    NoelFitz.

Obama canot sign anything until Congress passes it and if Congresss passes the FOCA, it willvery likely be watered down.

Yes, we want change. We want am end to the war in Iraq. We want civil liberities protected. We want the poor helped and the middle class.

If I am, excommunicated because I cannot vote for McCain in good conscience, democracy is now sinfcul. What’s next? a new inquistion?

Conservatism based on fear is doomed.

We have some sleight of hand (& issue) artists at work here.
Don’t try to deceive others the way you all have clearly done yourselves.

If Obama wins, we will have both a Democrat Prez & Congress – FOCA will pass with very little resistance.

The number of babies slaughtered by abortion vastly surpasses those who have died in Iraq – how can you possibly rationally consider that proportionately more important?

Civil liberties protected? You mean like freedom of speech & the right to assemble peacefully? Have you taken a look at how Obama’s actions differ from his words on that issue? (And just about every other issue)

You are willing to trust a man whose track record screams dishonesty & who would rather let a born baby die than infringe upon a woman’s right to choose to kill that baby. To paraphrase, Obama is like a certain ‘liar and a murderer from the beginning’… Hitler came into power because his countrymen decided that protection of the weak & vulnerable was of secondary importance to the economy, too.

The Catholic Church does not say vote Republican or Democrat. If the Democrats want Catholic support again, they have only to stop supporting elimination of the unfit & unworthy. There are actually a few, rare remaining pro-life Democrat candidates (the DNC puts up with them so that every 4 yrs they can take one out & wave them at the Catholics) and you are free to support those in good conscience (as long as they don’t support any other moral evils or at least are a better alternative than their opponent). This is no different than how the Church treats Republicans who support abortion. So the claim of political manipulation or bias is patently false.

Of course Democracy is not sinful – but twisting what other people say while ignoring what the Church teaches certainly is.

I will keep it simple you can do your own research at the sites provided.

1.2 million Americans dead in 2005! Cause?

Crime (Murder)? No only 16,692 deaths there in 2005 [http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/05cius/offenses/violent_crime/murder_homicide.html]

Health Care? No. 1.2 million people died from the 2 major causes of death in 2005 that are not due to immediate access to Health Care (Heart Disease and Cancer) [http://webapp.cdc.gov/cgi-bin/broker.exe]

War? No. In all wars and conflicts following the Revolutionary War and counting BOTH sides of the Civil War 1.26 million deaths.

In fact there were only 2.44 total in 2005 (and most of these deaths probably were not counted in that total) [http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm]

Cause… abortion! The web site that gives this count is a Pro-Abortion website.

You consider choosing someone for Abortion as your candidate based on _proportionate reasoning_ what is your balance on the scale for 1.2 million deaths a year.

McCain pro abortion in specific situation, not great but better proportionately to abortion on demand and allowing botched abortions to be killed also.

Democrats want civil liberties protected. Really? Is that why prolifers are silenced with “safety zones” around abortion mills. Is that why anybody who speaks out against homosexual behavior is branded a “homophobe”? Is that why the only choice which is respected is abortion? (even pro adoption license plates are fought) Is that why any African American who espouses limited government or family values is mocked and marginalized? (think Clarence Thomas and Alan Keyes)

Biden states that wealth redistribution is called “being fair” in his neighborhood. Who is he, Robin Hood? Have so called liberal folks never read the Declaration of Independence? …all men are endowed by their Creator with the right to LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (making money and acquiring wealth). Obama and Biden fail on two points.

Nobody is guaranteed anything for their efforts in this country. But you are guaranteed a fair playing field. The fact that a black man raised by a single mom is running for president indicates to me that America isn’t such a mean place after all.

Despite liberal propaganda, we’re not building a wall to keep people in. I’ve even heard there’s—shock!!!!—-a waiting list to enter the country, obtain a green card, or become a citizen. On a lighter note, did you notice how many gold medal Olympians have trained for years in the USA? Why is this?

For one, most people recognize we’re a free nation. However, as the article shows “political correctness” which is spawned by liberals who are afraid that the TRUTH will convert hearts has exerted is evil, insidious spawn even within Catholic rags. Sick!

My fellow Catholic darkness can’t stand the light.

(Oh! And by the way, did you see ANYWHERE in a mainstream news outlet that the infamous abortionist Dr Hillar almost killed a woman, named “S.” during a botched abortion? I didn’t think so.) Yet, Catholic Exchange carried the LifeSite article.

Purifying truth hurts, as it converts.

Noelfitz and Joanspage- Thank you for your posts. I am sincerely trying to understand why the other issues are more important than abortion for you. How are you able to vote for a person who is okay with killing innocent babies?

And, Noelfitz, would you mind responding specifically to wgsullivan’s comments the other day:

“Yes, there are many politicians on both sides of the isle very corrupt but the Republican platform is basically more in line with the Christ’s Church and it’s teachings than the Democrat platform. If we look at the non-negotiables of Jesus and His Church, the pro-life action of the current president (supreme court picks, non-funding of various UN groups pushing abortion, to name a few), the stances of the presidential nominees on life issues, and the proportionality teaching of Christ’s Church one may need to excercise our faith muscle and trust Christ and His Church. The Bishops can’t tell us out loud who to vote for but it’s obvious who they think we should vote for. And for some, a bitter pill to swallow.”

My faux pas the doctor’s last name is Tiller not “Hiller”. The article is below.

Abortion Patient of George Tiller Feared for Life: ‘They’re Liable to Kill Me’
    October 2nd, 2008 by LifeSite News ·Print ··
A life-threatening abortion complication landed a patient of late-term abortionist George R. Tiller in the hospital last Thursday. The woman has come forward to tell of her harrowing, near-death experience at Tiller’s Women’s Health Care Services (WHCS).
Patient S. has alleged that on Tuesday, September 23, abortionist Shelley Sella may have botched an injection into her abdomen, causing sepsis, a systemic infection that rapidly spreads throughout the body and can cause rapid death.
She also accuses Sella of misdiagnosing her pregnancy at 19 weeks, even though previous medical examinations placed her pregnancy at 23 weeks, beyond the legal limit in Kansas.
On Thursday, while sick, crying, and running a fever of 103.7°, Patient S. returned to WHCS where she was isolated in a locked room for four hours, during which time her pleas for release were ignored.
Patient S. was told that she should be quiet because she was upsetting the other women, and was threatened that unless her attitude changed, they would no longer treat her. She was also told that she would have to drive over three hours to a hospital in Kansas City where her abortion would be completed. She refused to make the trip and demanded that Tiller finish the procedure.
Patient S. observed that she continued to feel movements in her womb. Her mother was present during the removal of the baby, and observed Tiller inserting a tube into the baby’s skull and removing the brains, a procedure that is illegal if the baby was still alive.
Before the final procedure, Patient S. said that she feared, “They’re liable to kill me under sedation.” During the procedure, Patient S. suffered an asthma attack and cardiac arrest, but was revived.
Instead of calling an ambulance, Tiller drove Patient S. to Wesley Medical Center in his personal Jeep. She says she feared for her safety since Tiller apparently could not see very clearly, and was verbally directed though traffic by a female employee who was with them.
She was treated and discharged from the hospital on Saturday, September 27, 2008, even though she was still in pain and feeling sick from her ordeal.
Patient S.’s experience closely resembles that of 19- year old Christin Gilbert, who died from untreated sepsis during a third-trimester abortion at WHCS on January 13, 2005.
“We have repeatedly begged the authorities in Kansas to hold Tiller accountable for the many women he had hurt just over the past few years. How many women must be maimed or killed before Tiller is brought to justice? We say it again: Tiller is a menace and we demand that he be held accountable for his dangerous, if not criminal, actions. This time, the public should not take ‘no’ for an answer,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.
Watch the video of Patient S.’s ordeal:

We had a visiting priest at our parish this weekend and after listening to his homily on Pro-Life Sunday it is no wonder that Catholics are in the dark regarding life issues. The following is a highlight on these topics:

Abortion: Roe vs. Wade will never be overturned so we should limit our efforts to limiting abortion, he felt that it should be limited to when there was a heartbeat. He also said,”I’m tired of politicians buying our votes with the promise that will overturn Roe v. Wade. I wonder if the good father would have accepted this approach to slavery?

Humanea Vitae: A beatiful document on the sactitity of marriage. As to contraception he told the parish that the part “the bishops don’t like to talk about is that there is a conscience clause in there.”-no explanation that this “clause” refers to timing and spacing, not the use of artificial contraception

Euthanasia: We should all have a living will and durable power of attorney so we get what we want. That Terri Shiavoe case just “muddied the waters.” No discussion of ordinary vs. extraordinary means of sustaining life. No Catechism references.

Death Penalty: The Church “changed it’s teaching” because of the dispraportionate number of poor, mentally disabled, and blacks being executed. Really Father. is that what the Pope said?- not exactly what I heard being taught on protecting society and the adequacy of places to keep those convicted on heinous crimes.

Frankly I was appalled at the shallow presentation and that the Father’s message on all topics was basically to do what ever we ‘felt’ was best. This wasn’t guidance or teaching. The Gospel reference of being neither hot nor cold came to mind- I was the one who felt like vomiting! With these types of homilies being presented to the faithful we will continue to have those who parse, splice, and dice the church’s position to fit any scenario in a way that they are comfortable with.

Heavens! I would bet the visiting priest was somewhere in the range of 60-65 years old. Not to worry. Those of that sort of seriously flawed thinking are passing from the active ministry and some of this earth.
I am so blessed to live in the diocese I do. The homily and bulletin were full of Christ’s teaching on life and the abortive aspect of contraception. A friend attended the neighboring parish and said the priest there even spoke on the abortion stances of the two candidates. Our diocescean newspaper ran two full pages of ads on the non-negtiotable life issues and voters guides plus internet addresses of solid Catholic teaching sites. God is good!! God is Love!!!
I spoke to a woman at our LifeChain today simply because she had contemplated abortion 20 years ago and decided against. She felt it so important to attend and gather to pray.

As you all know, the abortion holocaust kills 1.2 million babies per year in the United States. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that if Barack Obama becomes president, and follows through on his promise to wipe out all state and federal restrictions on abortion, that number could very well double.

Senator John McCain has a 100% anti-abortion voting record. We Catholics need to reward him for that. He has been a champion for the unborn.

He is an adoptive father. He chose a courageous pro-life running mate. You wrongly besmirched his reputation by saying that “he favors abortion.”

How can we trust them to initiate the right kind of change in a presidency?
The media and Democrats are shielding who Obama really is and what he stands for, and we have the right to know. I think this article will open many people’s minds to the truth, which is what we NEED in this campaign. Can we really afford voter’s remorse with Obama?
