Bill Maher Wants a Brawl

On the January 4 edition of the NBC show "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," Bill Maher commented on a remark about religion that was allegedly made by presidential contender Mitt Romney. In the course of his comments, Maher said the following:

"You can't be a rational person six days of the week and put on a suit and make rational decisions and go to work and, on one day of the week, go to a building and think you're drinking the blood of a 2,000-year-old space god. That doesn't make you a person of faith…That makes you a schizophrenic."

O'Brien, looking a bit uneasy, then asked Maher whether anyone who is religious is schizophrenic. To which Maher replied, "Well, yes, sort of, because they have walled off a part of their mind."

Catholic League president Bill Donohue jumped on this today:

"There is no bigger anti-Christian bigot in the entertainment business than Bill Maher; he has shown that over and over again. While he may not like any religion, he has a special place in his portfolio of hatred for Christians, especially Roman Catholics. In Maher's twisted mind-which has long walled off rationality, to say nothing of decency-the mere mention of religion sets off a tirade against Jesus. We'll take the backhanded compliment.

"Unlike most non-believers, who are generally content to respect the right of most Americans to believe in God, guys like Maher want a brawl. He should be careful what he wishes for because there are those who pine to deliver."

    He might find himself in the company of lots of rational people like himself when he dies, if he's not careful.

    God loves you .

    What gets me is that Bill Maher expects that I consider him some sort of ‘space deity’ – a sort of MySpace kind of icon.

    But, I’ve never heard the man ever deliver a compelling line – the few times I have been where someone else had him ‘on’ instead of turning him ‘off’ in the presence of visitors. He has his dander up because Christ always has a bigger Nielsen rating without ever appearing on TV. Bill Maher not only has no Good News, He is bad news.

    I think that that circumstance – that God is God and they’re not – frustrates a lot of persons like him. After all, ‘celebrity’ really goes to their over-swollen heads. Their egos get in everyones’ way.

    I have even heard that plumping promoter of celebritydom, Larry King (even Don Imus!?!) has asked an occasional compelling question. Of HIM (in fact, both) I get all too much information, but in part because someone just has to mention a question he asked of ‘So-&-So’. For, there are all manner of good folk who think the absence of TV in my life is a deprivation.

    Ha. HAA! Ppfffttstst.

    Bill Maher, didn't he start out as a comedian?  And now he has own show and it is a news show?

    Personally I have never cared for Bill Maher.  Him and the south end of a north facing mule have a lot in common.  The scary part of all this is that so many people do watch him and feed hie over-inflated ego.  Which allows him to fit real well with the rest of Hollywood.

    I think our best response is to pray for the soul of Mr. Maher. We do not need any applause to justify our existence, we are saved by our faith.
