Bigotry Marks Debate over California Assisted-Suicide Bill

The California assembly is expected to vote next week on a bill that would allow doctors to provide a lethal drug dose to patients who have less than six months to live, are mentally competent and have requested the drug; they would administer it themselves. In the course of the debate over this bill, anti-Catholic bigotry has flared. Addressing this issue today is Catholic League president Bill Donohue:

"Those who believe in the ethics of assisted suicide should make their case without engaging in unethical conduct. They have not done so. On radio shows throughout California, commercials placed by Californians for Compassionate Choices have called into question the constitutional right of Catholic clergymen to speak to this issue. These spots mirror the invective employed against Los Angeles Archbishop Roger Cardinal Mahony that appear in the group's press releases.

"On May 7, Compassionate Choices said, ‘How can lawmakers follow the dictates of the Catholic Church rather than legislate on behalf of ALL Californians?' So when Catholic leaders speak out, they're dictating to lawmakers, but when others speak out, they're engaging in dialogue. Do even those who voice such nonsense believe what they say? Even worse is the lie, found on the group's website, that says there is ‘a well-funded pressure campaign to force Vatican dogma on all terminally ill Californians.' This is pure unadulterated demagoguery, and they know it.

"There is one Catholic that Compassionate Choices likes, and that's Daniel C. Maguire, the embittered ex-priest theologian from Marquette University. In his letter to the lawmakers, Maguire did what he always does — spin the truth. ‘Catholic theology is broader and more nuanced than Vatican theology,' he said.

"So if Vatican theology is not Catholic theology, is it Buddhist? And if the Vatican is not the source of Catholic theology, what is? The musings of Maguire?

"California lawmakers are free to decide what to do, but they also have a moral obligation to denounce bigotry. They should do so without delay."

This is ridiculous.  I'm so sick of Catholics being accused of inflicting their religion on others whenever we defend life.  Does that mean that if we favor legal restrictions on drive-by shootings, we are inflicting our religious views?

As a Californian, let me tell you this is even MORE serious than you think. This bill is being sponsored and promoted by "Catholic" Assembly members such as Assembly Speaker Favian Nunez. These "Catholic" members were all elected with the help (either directly or indirectly) of Cardinal Mahony and Abp Levada (when he was in Sodom by the Bay). For Roger the Red to now throw up his hands in mock disgust saying I cant believe they are doing this strains credibility.

Mahony has worked hard and long for 30 plus years to elect left wing, pro abort, Mexican "Catholic" politicians (remember he got Bob Dornan defeated by pro abort queen Loretta Sanchez). He can hardly act surprised now. He thinks California Catholics are stupid, ill informed and inherently democrat voters. It is pretty hard to disagree with his sentiment when you see the results.

Friends ,we will have euthanasia in America and the horror of it will dwarf the holocaust of abortion. There are dark days ahead. Better double up on the prayers!

    Ave Maria!

Jim is right, I think. I learned long ago in political science class that California is a bellweather state. Get rid of parental notification so the young girl can take the life of her child–and this is now going to be in case in other states such as New Hampshire.  Promote gay 'unions' or  call it 'marriage' even and see this coming state to state and take away the right to express indignation over the trampling of God's law and call it 'bigotry'.

The devil is good with words!  Words like 'choice' and 'tolerance' and 'bigotry' hurled about and that is because he is a liar and a murderer from the beginning. It is as St. Paul has said–we are not just fighting flesh and blood but powers and principalities. The devil has had a field day with the loss of Catholic culture and teaching–it has made souls fair game for his lies.

Congress introduced a bill to FORCE all pharmacists to always dispense birth control and Plan B–abortifacients. When this finally comes to be, pharmacists will also be forced to dispense the drugs to kill in 'euthanasia'.  We will become like Europe and have to have a guard over us in the hospital because it will go from 'requesting' to die to having someone else decide it is time for us to die! Do not think it cannot happen!

Another lying word" 'compassion' or 'mercy killing'.  Yes, take a life before God has taken it so that the soul does not have time to repent or reconcile but makes a fatal suicidal decision and will be aided by the medical community which was once about preserving life!  Our medical community is becoming depraved in some instances. It used to be 'first do no harm', so what happened to that?

God is the author of life! It is the devil who deals in death such as murders of abortion and euthanasia and it can be called whatever but the taking of an innocent life is and always will be murder.  The government can make it legal and enforce it and everything but a soul will not be facing congress when it dies, but God the Author of life.  And what will happen to those who fight this?  Just as the Right to Life is being chipped away at, the Right to Liberty will also be taken from us because those who oppose these agendas will be fined or jailed.  The Pursuit of Happiness will be taken and our constitution will mean ashes, nothing. The First Amendment will only be granted to some and not to all.

How about triple prayers? But we are to fight as best we can with prayers and with our public witness, day to day. Tomorrow God will give the the grace we need to face that day's challenges. If you ever listeded to Fr. John Hardon's tapes, he predicted that only STRONG Catholics will survive in the faith in coming years. It is easy to go with the flow and to deny the faith in the public arena for many specious reasons but the toll is ultimately taken on the soul.

    Joseph-Mary
