CNN’s Roland Martin Suggests Most Pro-Lifers Seem “Hateful”

On Friday afternoon, CNN's liberal contributor Roland Martin suggested that most people who are pro-life seem "hateful" as he was describing Mike Huckabee's need to reach out to non-evangelical voters. During an appearance on CNN Newsroom at about 1:47pm EST with anchor Kyra Phillips, Martin contended that Huckabee needs to pursue a strategy similar to that of President Bush in 2000: "Sure, [Huckabee is] a staunch pro-life person, but he isn't perceived as being hateful as other people who are pro-life."

Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of Martin's comments from the Friday, January 4 CNN Newsroom:

"What Huckabee also has to do, though, because the conventional wisdom says Huckabee is only attractive to evangelicals, and so what he is trying to do is what George W. Bush did in 2000. Take his faith and be able to say, 'Now let me be compassionate when it comes to the economy, when it comes to education, when it comes to health care. Sure, I'm a staunch pro-life person,' but he isn't perceived as being hateful as other people who are pro-life."

    Oh, but there's nothing hateful about promoting the murder of unborn babies.

       It's fairly obvious Martin doesn't have a clue as to what the real dymanics are between the "pro-life" and "pro-choice" camps. For abusive, slanderous and shrill language, nothing even comes close to the very vocal leadership of PPFA or NARAL Pro-Choice America. But then again, if Martin is a typical electronic medium journalist he's well ensconced in the politically "liberal" camp and has internalized all the bizarre presuppostions that go along with "pro-choice" (e.g. "a woman's right over control of her own body," abortion euphamized as a "termination of pregnancy," etc.). 

       On the other hand, for Martin (and other TV talking heads) the bellowing of a Cecile Richards or Hillary Clinton about protecting "a woman's reproductive rights" is nothing more than a spirited defense of one of those basic constitutional rights (assembly, press, voting, etc.) that only a hateful American would want to deprive a fellow-American of. Even moderate speech advocating the sanctity of the unborn is placed under this umbrella of "hateful."

    And anyway, is anyone surprised by such a ridiculous charge? Remember the eigth commandment of the "Ten Commandments of Choice" that almost everyone in Martin's line of work abides by religiously:

    8. Thy news media shalt NOT steal positive media exposure of pro-Choice advocates by granting unbiased news coverage, interviews, or equal airtime to informed, articulate proponents opposed to Choice, nor shalt thou grant any but the most superficial coverage to major national public anti-Choice events or outspoken anti-Choice political candidates.

    I am not surprised, but I didn't take the comment in the same context as others have. I took him to be saying that Huckabee would not be as hateful to those who are pro-abortion. In other words, he would appeal more to all those independents out there.
