Brazilian Soccer Heartthrob Responds to Supermodel’s Anti-Catholic Outburst

The Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen is receiving widespread media coverage after an outburst in which she criticized the Catholic Church for its teachings on premarital sex, abortion and contraceptives.

Bundchen's remarks follow closely on the heel's of Pope Benedict's visit to the Catholic country, during which visit he repeatedly restated the Church's teachings on social issues, exhorting Brazilians to live up to the ideals that their faith professes.

Bundchen, however, called the Church's teachings "ridiculous" in an interview with a Brazilian newspaper. At one point she made the unsubstantiated claim that in the modern world no one ever waits until marriage before having sex, even apparently calling into question the possibility that a man or woman can remain chaste until marriage.

"Today no one is a virgin when they get married … show me someone who's a virgin!" she said. She went on, criticizing the Catholic Church's moral teachings saying, "How is it possible to not want people to use condoms and also not have abortions? It's impossible, I'm sorry."

However, in an interview with the Italian edition of Vanity Fair that appeared just after the supermodel made her remarks, the Brazilian soccer superstar Ricardo Izecson Santos Leite has said that both he and his wife, Caroline, were virgins when they got married. Ricardo, one of Brazil's most successful soccer players, has long been known for both his outspoken Christian faith and his remarkable good looks.

"The Bible teaches that true love waits until marriage," Ricardo told Vanity Fair, saying about his marriage, "If our life today is so beautiful, I think it is because we waited."

The time prior to his and his wife's marriage, during which they conducted a chaste relationships, says Ricardo "was important, as it tested our love." The soccer star admitted that it was not easy to stay a virgin until his wedding night, and that even still there are difficulties in living faithfully, saying that "there are always temptations," but also says that the sacrifices that he and his wife made for each other have been more than worth it.

Gisele Bundchen, who is one of the most popular supermodels in the world, not only called into question the possibility of living chastely and defended the use of contraceptives and abortion, but in a bizarre twist actually indicated that the use of condoms should be "compulsory."

"It's ridiculous to ban contraceptives," she said. "You only have to think of the diseases that are transmitted without them. I think it should be compulsory to use a contraceptive."

When I heard of the young woman's comments I could only wonder when (and who) convinced her that no one is a virgin until marriage these days and why.

It brought to my mind a girl I knew my first year at Uni who was basically (as far as I could tell) badgered into a sexual relationship.

I remember the basic assumption being that being chaste was impossible  (at least if you were dating)

the girl who was proscribed birth control pills to go with her acne medication dispite the fact she wasn't even dating,

the condoms handed out during my frosh week (and the 'dealing with sex' play …. ick!)

the professor who wouldn't accept woman for his alcohol studies as he didn't trust that they wouldn't be pregnant (although he had every right to do so, as he put it one case of fetal alcohol syndrome due to his studies would be one too many)

the advice given in some magazine (I can't remember which one now) that if you didn't want a whiny brat of a boyfriend to just go ahead and give in (men need regular sex to stay in good temper afterall)

Thank God for those such as  Ricardo who are willing to testify that it is possible to remain chaste!

My husband and I will celebrate our 2nd Anniversary this July 30th-thanks be to God! When we were first getting to know each other we remarked on the fact that we were both interested in each other and both available. He asked me "Why were you still available?" I answered, "No offense, but most guys are only looking for one thing and when they find out they have to marry me to get it, they don't stick around. It used to bother me, but I decided that it was an excellent way to 'weed out the ones I don't want."  He asked if that meant that I was a virgin. I said that unfortunately I had made one mistake with one guy and it was a long time ago. I said that I was a 'secondary virgin' and that I was waiting for marriage. I also asked him if he was okay with this and if he also was looking for marriage. Obviously, I got the right answers. He told me that he was a 'secondary virgin' as well. God has blessed our marriage wonderfully! I couldn't be happier with my decision to wait. God honors committment! If that wasn't good enough, before we even celebrated our 1st Anniversary, my husband entered into full communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil 2006 with me as his sponsor!

Check out http://www.biblechristiansociety.com and get a FREE copy of John Martignoni's talk "MARRIAGE AND THE EUCHARIST" it is AWESOME! John explains JPII's Theology of the Body. This talk is wonderful for explaining to others not only the Church's teaching on sex and marriage, but also, it explains why the Church does not permit non-Catholics to receive the Eucharist.  Hope this is helpful.

God Bless and have a great week!
